5 minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower or Les Invalides, this hotel is a good value relative to location with a lot of quirks. A 300 year old former convent with 3 annexes. You never know where you’ll be walking after you check in at the front desk. Across the street from a British pub and next door to a boulangerie. Blase staff. No a.c., so noisy in summer with the windows open. LG

Decorated with old movie posters, this is in the heart of the Marais. Rates start at 65 euros. You get a small room with not a lot of noise-proofing, and a humorous bathroom, with a nice staff in a safe and trendy neighborhood, with more places open on Sundays than anywhere in Paris, since it’s the old Jewish Quarter. LG

In the heart of the Latin Quarter, this is a two star with actual bathtubs, a friendly staff, and a special focus on cleanliness. The 10 euro breakfast can be delivered to your room, no extra charge. Try to book above the 1st floor, as otherwise you’ll be trying to sleep right next to reception and the breakfast room. The website offers a last minute rate of only 78 euros for a double. Worth checking. Free wifi and internet access. LG

Very good value with a friendly staff. Extra clean for a two star. Small rooms but good sound-proofing. 90 seconds from a metro stop. Wine bars and cafes are steps away. Too small for a long stay, perfect for 3 nights or less. LG

A little high-priced for a two star, but the neighborhood gives you true old Paris instead of touristy Right Bank Paris. The staff is friendly, and the hotel was renovated in 1997. Back rooms are quieter but darker. Has air conditioning and continental breakfast. A bakery is literally next door. Close (but not too close) to Gard du Nord, the Opera and Pigalle. No Amex. LG

Hotel Eldorado

Funky fun neighborhood, ten minute walk to Printemps, and very cheap as you share bathrooms. Walls are thin, not for light sleepers. The delicious next door cafe is more upmarket than the hotel. Go figure. Montmartre fans will like this place. LG

Budget hotel in a central, safe neighborhood with prime shopping nearby. 5 blocks from the CDG Roissy bus drop-off at Opera. In summer, request a courtyard room so you can open the windows for air without being assaulted by street noise. Insiders say room 42 has a tiny, hard-to-work shower, try and avoid it. Surprisingly friendly desk staff. LG

Very central location at Republique, where 4 metro lines stop. Short walk to the North Marais, and unlike many two star hotels, it’s on a quiet dead end street. Shopping and cafes are nearby at the Canal St. Martin. LG

Hotel du Mont Blanc

This is a clean 4 story hotel with air conditioning in the Latin Quarter. Rooms are tiny, showers are odd, but the price is right and the location is fantastic. The bus from CDG stops very close by; Patisserrie du Papa, across the street, has a 4 euro breakfast special, and you can get internet access at a cafe called Milk, right next to McDonalds. Cheap ethnic food abounds in this neighborhood, an easy walk to Notre Dame. Avoid a street-facing room as it is noisy even with the windows closed. LG

Hotel Champ Du Mars

This a pleasant two star hotel off the Rue Cler; easy access to the famous market there. Rooms are especially quiet, with two rooms off the interior garden. Triples are available. The Air France shuttle bus stops very nearby.
